Scenic Turns 40—and Celebrates by Ordering More Ships

Some people celebrate turning 40 with a party. Scenic Group is having the party, then adding ships, rivers and an Antarctic season to the calendar. Apparently, a cake wasn’t going to cover it.

Founded in Australia in 1986, the company is marking its anniversary this October with celebrations across Scenic and Emerald Cruises & Tours, while outlining an expansion program stretching through 2028 and beyond. For passengers, the more interesting birthday news is where those ships will take them.

A Birthday with Some Mileage Behind It

My own experience with Scenic came aboard Scenic Pearl on the Rhine and Moselle earlier this year.

As much as I enjoyed the destinations, it was life aboard that made the journey: excellent dining, thoughtfully poured wines, attentive service and the pleasure of settling back into a ship where we felt thoroughly looked after. Scenic’s all-inclusive fares added to that ease. With dining, drinks, excursions and gratuities included, we could enjoy the trip without continually calculating what the next pleasure would cost.

The itinerary was beautifully planned, with each port adding something distinctive and the days fitting together into a satisfying whole. But whatever awaited us ashore, Scenic Pearl was the perfect place to come home to. After a day of exploring, returning aboard felt like a pleasure in its own right: time to relax, a drink before dinner and an evening worth looking forward to. That balance between discovery and comfort is what I will be watching for as Scenic’s fleet grows.

Founder and Chairman Glen Moroney credits guest feedback with guiding Scenic’s investment in ships, destinations and journeys. He also points to the company’s involvement in designing, building, owning and operating its fleet as a way to exercise greater control over the guest experience. Forty years into the business, Scenic is making a substantial bet on what those guests want next.

From the Seine to India

Europe remains part of that story. Emerald Lumi is scheduled to begin sailing France’s Seine River in 2027, expanding Emerald’s river offering. Paris is a persuasive place to begin almost anything, including a cruise.

India represents a more significant new direction. Scenic Aura is scheduled to begin cruising the Hooghly River in October 2027. Designed for just 44 guests, the ship’s inaugural program pairs a 10-night river cruise through West Bengal with land journeys in India and Sri Lanka. Expansion onto the Brahmaputra is planned for 2028. These additions should appeal to travelers ready to look beyond Europe’s familiar river routes.

Meanwhile, Scenic Spirit II and Scenic Spirit III are scheduled to launch on the Mekong in 2028, further expanding the group’s presence in Southeast Asia.

The Yacht Calendar Gets Busier

Emerald’s yacht fleet is also growing, with Emerald Raiya expected in 2027 and Emerald Xara in 2028. The expansion will broaden the brand’s destination offering, including the Seychelles.

Scenic Eclipse II is scheduled to return to Asia Pacific in 2028, while Emerald Xara’s arrival will add to the group’s presence in the region.

Then comes Scenic Ikon, scheduled to debut in the Mediterranean in April 2028, with Antarctica included in its inaugural season. For anyone whose holiday deliberations run from “perhaps somewhere sunny” to “perhaps somewhere with penguins,” that is a particularly useful range.

These remain future plans, but together they show the scale of Scenic’s ambitions across both river and ocean cruising.

October Guests Get the Party

Travelers sailing with Scenic and Emerald this month are being treated to special dining events, themed entertainment and commemorative experiences.

Selected loyalty departures add another layer to the celebrations. The annual Scenic Discovery Yachts Chairman’s Voyage in the United States includes special events in Wilmington, Charleston and Key West. A Scenic Romantic Rhine & Moselle sailing, paired with a Switzerland land extension, includes an exclusive dinner in Lucerne hosted by group management.

Having sailed the Rhine and Moselle, I can see the appeal. Adding dinner in Lucerne hardly weakens the argument.

A Birthday Bonus for Travelers

Scenic Group is offering an additional $200 per person in savings on selected departures for bookings made October 12–26, 2026, using code BOOST26.

The anniversary offer covers selected 2026 and 2027 Scenic and Emerald Rhine and Danube river cruises, including Christmas market itineraries; selected 2027 Scenic Discovery Yacht departures in the Western Mediterranean; and selected Emerald yacht sailings in the Caribbean and Seychelles departing November 2026 through March 2027. Travelers should confirm eligibility for their chosen departure.

At 40, Scenic appears to have reached the age when you know what you like—and have a fairly ambitious plan for getting more of it. The rest of us may celebrate with another glass of Champagne. Scenic has apparently asked for another shipyard slot.
