A Rich Transatlantic Crossing History

Cunard is having a year full of celebrations and milestones, as July is a special month for not only the U.S., but for the British cruise line as well. July 4 marks the anniversary of Cunard’s very first crossing, when RMS Britannia departed Liverpool for Boston all the way back in 1840. That sailing marked the start of an era, as it launched the world’s first regularly scheduled transatlantic steamship service — forever changing global travel, trade, and communication.

Impressively, nearly 200 years later Cunard is still the only cruise line that offers regularly scheduled transatlantic crossings aboard the world’s only ocean liner, Queen Mary 2.

Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary

On July 4, 2026, New York Harbor will come alive for Sail4th 250, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with the largest flotilla of tall ships and naval vessels ever assembled. It’s hard to even imagine what that will look like!

Queen Mary 2 ‘s passengers will have a prime viewing spot for the festivities, honoring Cunard’s long and storied connection to U.S. history. An estimated one in five immigrants traveled to the U.S. aboard Cunard steamships between 1840 and 1923. Today, Cunard’s ocean travel legacy lives on with its current fleet of four ships around the world: Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, Queen Mary 2, and the newest member of the family, Queen Anne.
