Fairmont Waterfront: An Ideal Stay in Vancouver

If you’re cruising from Vancouver, consider arriving a few days early or extending your stay after disembarkation. Vancouver is a world-class multicultural city that deserves to be explored. Its natural beauty, oceanfront setting, and outstanding culinary scene captivate visitors from around the globe.

An ideal place to stay is the Fairmont Waterfront, located directly across the street from Canada Place, where you’ll board your ship. From Vancouver International Airport (YVR), it’s a 40-minute drive by taxi or ride-share, or a convenient 20-minute journey on the Canada Line, Vancouver’s rapid transit system. The train departs directly from the airport and terminates at Waterfront Station, just steps from the hotel. There is even underground access connecting the transit station, hotel, and Canada Place.

Elegance at First Sight

The double-height, spacious lobby, with its natural stone finishes, warm wood accents, and gleaming tiled floors, makes an elegant first impression upon arrival. All 489 guest rooms and suites are well-appointed and offer views of the city, Stanley Park, or the harbour, framed by Vancouver’s spectacular North Shore mountains.

The Signature Harbour View King Corner Room, however, is my top pick. At 470 square feet, this stunning accommodation features 180-degree floor-to-ceiling views and a full size chaise longue perfectly positioned to take them in. The hotel also has a Fairmont Gold floor, where guests enjoy access to the exclusive Fairmont Gold Lounge, a complimentary full breakfast, evening canapés, private check-in, and dedicated concierge services.

Elevated Outdoor Spaces

The Fairmont Waterfront’s outdoor amenities are literally elevated, located on the hotel’s third floor. Here you’ll find the fitness centre, an indoor whirlpool, and a heated outdoor pool surrounded by loungers. Also on this level are terrace rooms overlooking the garden, offering direct access to the open pool deck.

Of course, if you’re looking for even more fresh air, simply cross the street and stroll along the waterfront promenade toward Stanley Park. Watch seaplanes take off and land in the harbour while enjoying panoramic views of the water and mountains. Canada Place is one of the few cruise terminals where visitors can get up close to the ships and watch them sail away on their journeys. The surrounding neighbourhood also offers numerous dining options, while Robson Street and Pacific Centre are within easy walking distance.

Delicious Dining

Just off the lobby, ARC Restaurant + Bar is flooded with natural light and serves Pacific Northwest cuisine with an emphasis on local seafood and regional ingredients. The restaurant is open throughout the day and also hosts a daily happy hour featuring a lounge menu at reduced prices.

The weekend bottomless brunch is not to be missed. Rather than a buffet, guests order directly from the menu, and dishes arrive at the table in shareable portions. I recommend ordering 3-4 dishes at a time, so everything arrives fresh and hot, and save room for dessert. Brunch is served here every weekend from 11:30-2:30. Stay as long as you like to enjoy the attentive service and the delicious food.

I also loved that the hotel keeps an herb and vegetable garden, as well as an apiary to produce honey for the restaurant and the cocktail menu. The Fairmont Waterfront also sources as much produce and supplies from local suppliers as possible, so your stay feels more connected to the destination.

Multi-Year Renovation Initiative

The Fairmont Waterfront has recently completed the first phase of a multi-year renovation initiative designed to reflect its “Pure Coastal Luxury” vision. Guest room enhancements include refreshed soft furnishings, new 65-inch televisions, and elegant multi-purpose tables that replace traditional work desks. Guests continue to enjoy the Fairmont Signature Bed with its pillow-top mattress, along with Fairmont’s Le Labo bath amenities. The renovation program is scheduled for completion by the end of 2029.

Pro tip: Because the renovations are being completed in phases, when making a reservation, it’s worth confirming whether your room has already been updated. That said, I also viewed an unrenovated room and found it to be in excellent condition. If you are visiting outside the summer season, you should also be aware that renovation work may be taking place during your stay.

Convenience for Cruisers

For guests cruising from Canada Place, the Fairmont Waterfront offers a pre-cruise package, which includes luggage transfer – a gratuity-based service. Guests’ bags will be transported from the hotel straight into their cabin on their ship. I highly suggest taking advantage of this offer, as the embarkation process at Canada Place requires going to the main floor to check in, then down to the lower level to pass security and immigration. So having luggage sent directly to the cabin will make embarkation effortless. Vehicles can be left at an indoor parking lot at a 7-day rate.
