Carnival’s First Woman Staff Captain & Why I Think It Matters

Carnival Cruise Line just made a little history.

Daniela Garavello has been promoted to staff captain aboard Carnival Adventure, becoming the first woman in Carnival’s history to hold the position.

First off, congratulations to her. This is not some ceremonial title. Staff captain is the ship’s second-in-command, with major responsibility for marine operations, safety and the bridge team. It is also one of the most important steps on the path toward becoming captain.

But when I saw the announcement, one thing immediately stood out to me: It’s 2026.

Women have already commanded ships at other major cruise lines, including brands within Carnival Corporation, for years. Carnival itself has had a woman serving as president since 2015.

So why did it take until now for the brand to have its first woman staff captain?

That is what I wanted to dig into in this video commentary. Because I fully believe the milestone deserves celebrating — but I also think it deserves some context.

The Number I’m Curious to Learn

My question is not about whether Garavello earned the job. Everything about her career says she did and then some.

She joined Carnival as a deck cadet in 2013 and worked her way to the second-highest position on the bridge. That is a serious career progression.

What I would like to know now is how many women are currently serving as first officers, second officers and deck cadets across Carnival’s fleet?

That number would tell us whether this promotion represents the beginning of a larger change or whether Garavello remains an exception.

Being the first is important. Being followed by a second, third and fourth is what turns a milestone into a trend.

That is why I put a simple test on this in the video. If Carnival names another woman staff captain within the next couple of years, I think we will be able to look back at this promotion as the beginning of something meaningful.
