Riviera Travel Charts a New Course for Solo Cruisers
The world’s first river ship devoted to solo travelers sets sail in 2027, redefining what it means to cruise alone.
I’ve done a great deal of solo traveling over the years. When my partner, Andrew, can’t join me, I’ve discovered the joys and challenges of setting out on my own. Cruising solo, in particular, can be immensely rewarding. There’s the freedom to set your own pace, but too often it comes with hefty single supplements or a sense of being the odd one out among couples and groups.

That’s why Riviera Travel’s latest announcement is such a breakthrough. In June 2027, the line will introduce the MS George Eliot, the first cruise ship in the world dedicated entirely to solo travelers. This is not a token gesture or a handful of cabins set aside; it’s an entire ship, its full season designed with solo guests at the forefront.
Redesigned for One
The George Eliot, originally built to carry 140 passengers, will now sail with just 68, all solo travelers in double cabins, 83 percent of which have French balconies. With a crew-to-guest ratio of nearly one to two, service promises to be among the most personal on Europe’s rivers.

Riviera’s model includes all the essentials: excursions, meals, and an all-day drink package. The line also said that “daily entertainment will let travelers connect with those who have shared interests for a social connection when desired.”
Itineraries for Independence
The ship’s debut season will feature four seven-night river cruise itineraries: The Blue Danube, Rhine Cruise to Switzerland, Rhine & Moselle, and Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg. Each promises Riviera’s blend of cultural immersion and value, with local guides, dedicated cruise directors, and the chance to share the journey with fellow independent travelers.
For those of us who’ve learned that traveling solo doesn’t mean traveling alone, Riviera’s move feels downright revolutionary. Reservations are already open for 2027, and something tells me the George Eliot will book up faster than you can say Prost! along the Danube.
