Cruise Drink Packages Decoded: When It’s Worth It (And When It’s Not)
Cruise drink packages promise freedom — order what you want, when you want, and never worry about the tab. But are they actually worth it?
After cruising on more than 50 sailings across nearly every major line, I’ve tested drink packages in all types of scenarios: short getaways, long sailings, port-heavy itineraries, and even dry days at sea. Sometimes, the math worked out beautifully. Other times, I left money on the table (and water in my wine glass).
Here’s a practical breakdown of when cruise drink packages are worth it — and when they’re not — plus the real math behind the bubbly.
What’s Typically Included in a Cruise Drink Package?
Most cruise drink packages include:
- Alcoholic beverages up to a dollar limit per drink (usually $12–$15)
- Soft drinks and sodas
- Specialty coffees (in some premium packages)
- Mocktails and bottled water
- Juices and energy drinks (varies by line)
Keep in mind, many lines offer tiered packages (e.g., basic soda package, classic package, premium package), so knowing what you drink is key.
What They Cost (2025 Averages)
Prices vary by line, sailing, and sometimes even itinerary — but here’s what you can expect:
- Carnival CHEERS! Package: ~$59.95/day + 18% gratuity
- Royal Caribbean Deluxe Package: ~$63–$89/day + 18%
- Norwegian Unlimited Open Bar: Often bundled into Free at Sea promo, or ~$109/day standalone
- Celebrity Classic Package: ~$89/day + 20% gratuity
- Princess Plus Add-on: $60/day (includes drinks, Wi-Fi, and gratuities)
Important: You typically must purchase for the entire length of the cruise, and both adults in a cabin must usually buy it if one does.
When a Cruise Drink Package Is Worth It
✅ You Drink 5–6+ Beverages a Day
This is the break-even zone. If you regularly enjoy 2–3 cocktails, a couple glasses of wine at dinner, and a specialty coffee or soda, the math works.
✅ You Like Freedom Without the Bill Shock
There’s value in not worrying about how much you’re spending mid-vacation. For some, peace of mind is worth the markup.
✅ You Plan to Stay Onboard Most Days
Sea-day-heavy itineraries make it easier to hit drink minimums. If you’re in port all day or doing intense excursions, you’ll naturally drink less.
✅ You Booked During a Promotion
Sometimes drink packages are bundled in at a discounted rate or with onboard credit. In those cases, it’s often a good value — but always read the fine print.
When a Drink Package Isn’t Worth It
❌ You’re in Port Most of the Time
Mediterranean or Alaska sailings often involve long days ashore. If you’re not drinking onboard during the day, you may struggle to break even.
❌ You’re a Light Drinker
If one glass of wine or a cocktail is your limit, you’re better off paying à la carte. Even just buying a bottle of wine and spacing it out over meals is often cheaper.
❌ Your Cabinmate Doesn’t Drink
Many cruise lines require both adults in a cabin to buy the package. This can turn an okay deal into a lopsided expense — unless you’re on a line like Celebrity, which sometimes makes exceptions.
❌ You’re in a Suite With Perks
Suite guests on some lines (like MSC Yacht Club, Celebrity Retreat, or Norwegian Haven) already get upgraded beverage perks. Double check before buying extra.
Sample Day: Breaking Even
Let’s say you’re on Royal Caribbean and the Deluxe Beverage Package costs $75/day (with gratuity):
- 2 specialty coffees: $5 each
- 1 mimosa at brunch: $10
- 2 poolside cocktails: $13 each
- 2 glasses of wine at dinner: $12 each
- 1 nightcap (whiskey): $12
- Bottled water: $3
Total Value: $85
You’ve already come out ahead… if you actually drink this much. (no judgment)
Pro Tips to Maximize Value
- Buy pre-cruise through your cruise planner or app. It’s almost always cheaper than onboard.
- Share non-alcoholic items (some lines allow one person to grab water or soda for a cabinmate).
- Use it for bottled water at ports — grab two before heading out.
- Track your drinks the first day (even if you don’t have the package) to see if it’s worth it retroactively, if your line allows it.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
A drink package is worth it if:
- You drink moderately to heavily
- You value convenience and don’t want to think about costs
- You plan to be onboard and relaxed, not just sightseeing every day
It’s not worth it if:
- You drink lightly or infrequently
- You have perks already included
- You’re watching your cruise budget closely
As with most things at sea, it comes down to knowing your habits — and doing a little math before sailaway.
