Amadeus River Cruises Christens Aurea in Amsterdam, Adds Hybrid-Propulsion Ship to Rhine and Danube Fleet
Amadeus River Cruises christened its newest vessel, Amadeus Aurea, in Amsterdam on May 12, 2026, adding a 158-passenger hybrid-propulsion ship to a fleet that now totals 18 vessels sailing Europe’s Rhine and Danube. The 135-meter Aurea is operating its maiden season this spring and summer before shifting to Christmas market itineraries in late November.

The christening also broke a long-standing Amadeus tradition. For more than 40 years, the Austrian family-run line has selected godmothers from inside the Lüftner family. This time the honor went to Kristie Keller, a New York-based travel advisor and owner of Addicted to Adventures. She is the first non-family member and the first travel agent ever named godmother of an Amadeus vessel. Keller broke a champagne bottle against the bow during a dockside ceremony attended by founders Wolfgang and Martina Lüftner and their three daughters, who help run the company.
What’s on Board
Aurea carries up to 158 guests in a mix of suites with walk-out balconies and standard staterooms. Onboard spaces include a spa and fitness area, a European-style café branded Café Vienna, and a sun deck with a heated pool.
That guest count puts the ship at the lower-density end of European river cruising. Viking Longships carry roughly 190 guests on a comparable 135-meter hull, and AmaWaterways’ newer vessels range from 156 to 196 passengers. More space per guest is one of the ways Amadeus positions itself against the higher-volume mainstream lines.
The Propulsion Story
Aurea runs on a hybrid diesel-electric system paired with solar panels, heat recovery, and a centralized energy management platform. Exterior glass is designed to cut heat transfer and improve onboard climate performance.
Propulsion technology is becoming the competitive battleground in European river cruising. Viking has been pursuing fuel-cell capability with its hydrogen-ready Viking Libra and Viking Astrea. Uniworld and AmaWaterways have both signaled hybrid or alternative-fuel ships in upcoming newbuild rounds. Amadeus reports its fleet average age at roughly three years, among the youngest on the European rivers, which gives the line a head start as emissions standards tighten across the continent.
“With the launch of the Amadeus Aurea, we are continuing our long-term commitment to investing in the future of premium river cruising,” said Wolfgang Lüftner, founder and CEO of Amadeus River Cruises, in a statement. He framed Aurea as an attempt to deliver sustainability and luxury together for travelers who want meaningful experiences without sacrificing quality.
Itineraries and Season

Aurea will sail standard Amadeus routes. On the Rhine, the ship operates the classic Amsterdam-to-Basel itinerary, calling at the usual vineyard towns and the UNESCO-recognized stretch of the Middle Rhine. On the Danube, it will run the round-trip “Danube Rhapsody” from Passau, which hits Vienna and Budapest, and the “Blue Danube” voyage from Nuremberg to Passau.
The ship’s late-year deployment is a Christmas markets cruise called “Magic of Advent,” sailing between Strasbourg and Cologne. Holiday market sailings remain one of the strongest demand pockets in European river cruising, with most major operators expanding their Advent-season inventory in response.
