Robert Downey Jr., a Star-Studded Ceremony, and Disney’s Big Bet on Southeast Asia

Disney Cruise Line has officially arrived in Southeast Asia, and it did so in the only way Disney knows how: with a full orchestra, beloved characters, an Iron Man, and enough magic to fill the South China Sea.

On March 4, 2026, Disney Cruise Line christened the Disney Adventure in Singapore, marking a watershed moment not just for the cruise line, but for the entire Asia-Pacific cruise market. The Disney Adventure is Disney Cruise Line’s first-ever ship to homeport in Asia, and its largest vessel to date, a floating kingdom drawing on more than 100 years of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel storytelling.

A Christening Ceremony to Remember

The christening ceremony, held in the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the ship, was nothing short of spectacular. Regional vocalists and musicians took the stage alongside a 23-piece orchestra, weaving through classic Disney, Pixar, and Marvel melodies while immersive visuals engulfed the audience on all sides. Hollywood Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductee Jed Madela and Eurovision standout Dami Im headlined the musical performances, giving the event an unmistakably global flavor, fitting for a ship that will sail from one of the world’s great international cities.

Captain Mickey and Captain Minnie made their inevitable and irresistible appearances, and Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company, took the stage alongside President of Disney Signature Experiences Joe Schott to mark the occasion.

“Our cruise ships are ambassadors of our brand that carry joy, wonder and enchantment to destinations around the world,” said D’Amaro. “The Disney Adventure represents a new chapter for Disney Cruise Line and will introduce Disney to audiences who may be experiencing our magic for the very first time.”

But perhaps no moment drew more attention than the ship’s official blessing, delivered by none other than Robert Downey Jr., the Disney Adventure’s Godparent.

With characteristic flair, Downey Jr. cued the orchestra before delivering the ceremonial words: “I christen thee, Disney Adventure, may God bless this ship and all who sail upon her.” He called the naming “an honor,” and given his long relationship with Walt Disney Imagineering, his enthusiasm felt entirely genuine. The crowd, needless to say, went wild.

The ceremony closed with a cast of beloved Disney characters joining in a rendition of “Let’s Set Sail,” the Disney Cruise Line tradition that signals adventures ahead.

What’s Actually on the Ship?

Beyond the glamour of the christening, the Disney Adventure has plenty to offer future passengers. The ship is organized into seven immersive themed areas, each designed to transport guests into a different corner of the Disney universe. Among the highlights:

  • San Fransokyo Street, inspired by Big Hero 6, brings the beloved animated city to life onboard.
  • A brand-new Broadway-style musical called “Remember” is exclusive to the ship.
  • Signature Disney Cruise Line fireworks at sea return, because of course they do.
  • And for thrill-seekers, the ship debuts the cruise line’s first-ever roller coaster at sea, the Ironcycle Test Run, which is almost certainly going to be the talk of every sailing.

There are also dedicated clubs for kids of all ages, a robust lineup of adult bars and lounges, and immersive dining experiences throughout.

Singapore, already one of the world’s premier cruise hubs, now has a permanent Disney presence, and the debut itineraries (three- and four-night sailings beginning March 10) are priced and paced to appeal to both first-time cruisers and Disney superfans across the region.

It also puts Disney Cruise Line firmly in growth mode. The fleet now stands at eight ships, with five more slated to join by 2031. That’s an aggressive expansion timeline, and the Southeast Asia debut suggests the line has its eyes firmly on markets that major cruise lines have historically underserved.
