Celebrity Cruises Unveils Destination Program for Its River Cruise Line
Celebrity River Cruises has introduced a four-category destination discovery program that puts locally led cultural experiences at the center of every European port call.

The program, announced today, applies to all 2027 and 2028 Celebrity River Cruises sailings. It also covers pre- and post-cruise stays in Prague, Budapest, and Amsterdam.
Four Categories, Each With a Different Approach
All four experience types are included in the cruise fare.
The Storyteller Series pairs guests with local residents, artists, and cultural insiders who lead small-group tours through their home cities. Each port offers multiple options that mix well-known landmarks with spots only a local would think to visit. In Amsterdam, a canal captain navigates guests through hidden waterways while talking through the city’s centuries-long relationship with water. In Prague, a local brewer walks the group through the city’s beer heritage, stopping at historic breweries and artisanal shops along the way.

The Skillmaster Series is hands-on. Guests cook, paint, and create alongside local artisans. In Budapest, a local grandmother teaches Hungarian family recipes after a trip to the Central Market Hall. In Amsterdam, a painting workshop follows a visit to the Van Gogh Museum, where guests then try techniques inspired by the artist’s work.

The Keys to the City Series works differently. Guests get access to a digital platform loaded with curated route maps organized by interest: architecture, food, art, history. Stationed local hosts are posted along routes to provide behind-the-scenes access at working studios and craft sites. In Bratislava, architecture fans can follow a self-guided path from St. Martin’s Cathedral to Bratislava Castle to the UFO Bridge, with historians and architects posted at each stop.

The Celebrity Takeover Series happens once per sailing. Celebrity describes these as exclusive private events at European landmarks or public spaces, open only to its river cruise guests. Specific takeover experiences have not yet been announced.
Pre- and Post-Cruise Stays Extend the Experience
Celebrity River Cruises will also offer multi-day pre- and post-cruise stays in Prague and Budapest starting in 2027, with Amsterdam added in 2028. Each package includes daily small-group tours with local hosts, premium hotel accommodations, concierge service, breakfast, and airport transfers.
The goal is to close the gap between what happens onboard and what happens on land, so the trip feels continuous from arrival to departure.
What This Signals for River Cruising
River cruising in Europe is a crowded market, and destination programming is increasingly where lines try to set themselves apart. Celebrity is betting on locally led, culturally immersive experiences at a time when many travelers, especially repeat cruisers, want more than standard bus tours and earpiece-guided walks.
“We’ve built a destination program that connects guests to Europe more personally than anything the river cruise industry has offered before,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises.
Worth noting: all four categories are included in the fare rather than sold as paid add-ons. That positions Celebrity River Cruises as a premium product without the extra charges that frustrate some river cruise passengers.
Celebrity River Cruises is still newer to the European river market compared to established operators like Viking, AmaWaterways, and Avalon. This destination program looks like a deliberate play to carve out a distinct identity in a space where many itineraries overlap and onboard products start to blur together.
