Holland America Line Teams with Jefferson’s Bourbon to Age Barrels Aboard Its Entire Fleet
Holland America Line has partnered with Jefferson’s Bourbon to age barrels of Jefferson’s Ocean Bourbon at sea across all 11 ships in the cruise line’s fleet, marking the distillery’s first partnership with a cruise line for its Ocean Aged at Sea program.

The collaboration was announced March 27, 2026, on International Whiskey Day. Barrel loading began that month, with all 11 ships expected to carry their own exclusive barrel by the end of April 2026. Each barrel will remain aboard for a minimum of six months, exposed to the ship’s shifting climates, ocean air, and constant motion before being bottled and returned to the fleet for guest consumption in 2027.
How the Program Works
Each barrel is assigned to a specific ship and will experience conditions unique to that vessel’s route and sailing region. Once bottled, each barrel is expected to yield approximately 150 to 300 bottles, available exclusively to Holland America guests aboard the ship where the barrel aged.

Throughout the aging period, Holland America plans to offer onboard activations including educational tastings that connect the ship’s itinerary to the spirit’s development. The program expands upon the cruise line’s existing single-barrel beverage program.

Jefferson’s Bourbon has operated its Ocean Aged at Sea program for several years, previously completing 35 bottled voyages on cargo and fishing vessels. The Holland America partnership is the first time the distillery has extended that program to a cruise line fleet.
The Role of Itinerary in Flavor Development

Jefferson’s Founder Trey Zoeller developed the ocean-aging concept to study how maritime conditions, including temperature fluctuation, wave motion, and salt air, affect whiskey maturation. Because Holland America ships sail a wide range of global itineraries, each barrel will be exposed to distinct environmental conditions, potentially producing variation in flavor from ship to ship.
“By placing Jefferson’s Ocean barrels on their cruise ships, we’re diving into a quest to see how different routes and voyages influence the taste, smell, and mouthfeel of our whiskey,” Zoeller said in a statement. “The whiskey they enjoy will be exclusive to their ships, available only once the voyage is complete.”
America’s 250th Celebration Partnership
The Jefferson’s collaboration is one of several brand partnerships Holland America has assembled under its America’s 250th celebration theme, “The Spirit of Independence.” Jefferson’s Bourbon carries an eight-generation American heritage, including a family history that traces to one of the first women documented for involvement in American whiskey production.
Other 250th partnerships include Pendleton Woolen Mills, which produced a limited-edition Alaska-themed throw blanket available on Alaska sailings in 2026, and Crane stationery, which collaborated with the United States Veterans’ Artists Alliance on an original card collection inspired by the cruise line’s ships and tulip logo.

Holland America is also planning a 28-day Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage in 2027, tracing the historic Clipper routes through the Caribbean across 18 ports.
Looking Ahead
The bottled results of the shipboard aging program are expected to become available aboard Holland America ships in 2027. The cruise line has not announced pricing or a specific release timeline for the individual barrel bottlings.
Guests sailing on Holland America ships through at least October 2026 may have the opportunity to participate in onboard tastings and follow the bourbon’s aging progress in real time before the bottles are delivered.
