Royal Caribbean Commits to Community Center Project in Mexico

Royal Caribbean has confirmed plans to advance the development of the new Mahahual K’iin Community Center in Mexico.

The new center, which is located along the Carretera Cafetal-Mahahual at the heart of town, will build on a community space that has served Mahahual since 2014, with expanded capacity for education, recreation, cultural programming, and local gatherings in an easy-to-access local for more residents. Its new name, Mahahual K’iin (which means “the sun of Mahahual”) was proposed and selected through a community vote.

Plans for the future center include modern, flexible spaces for workshops, education, and community-led events, as well as outdoor recreation areas for soccer, basketball, volleyball, and community gatherings. Royal Caribbean plans to begin construction once the necessary permits and approvals have been obtained.

“The Mahahual K’iin Community Center is the result of the strength, participation and dreams of our community,” said Senaida Gómez, director of the Mahahual K’iin Community Center. “This new phase will allow us to expand our impact, strengthen our programs and create safe spaces for children, young people and families. We will continue working to ensure this center is a place of gathering, growth and well-being for everyone.”

Since opening its doors, the center has hosted workshops, engaged volunteers, and supported kids and families through programs that promote learning, creativity, wellness, and community connection. The new center will expand that impact with more space and new opportunities for residents to learn, connect, and grow.

Mahahual was the planned spot for a Royal Caribbean guest-facing destination called Perfect Day Mexico, which would have opened in 2027 and been located at the Costa Maya cruise port. However, the project faced opposition from the beginning, and was essentially shut down by the Mexican government this past spring. It is rumored that new locations for the private cruise destination in Mexico are being discussed.
