American Cruise Lines to Christen American Encore in Lewiston, Idaho
American Cruise Lines will launch its newest riverboat, American Encore, on the Columbia and Snake Rivers next month, with a christening ceremony in Lewiston, Idaho on May 12 that the company says will be the first ship christening ever held in the state.

The vessel begins service May 5, kicking off a regular schedule of Pacific Northwest itineraries before the formal christening a week later at the line’s new Lewiston dock. The event marks the first time American Cruise Lines has staged a naming ceremony in Idaho, and reflects the company’s expanding footprint along the Columbia and Snake river system.
A New Ship for the Pacific Northwest
American Encore is the latest addition to American Cruise Lines’ modern riverboat fleet, joining sister ships American Melody, American Symphony, American Serenade, and American Legend. The Columbia and Snake Rivers route has become one of the line’s signature itineraries, with cruises typically running between Portland, Oregon and Clarkston, Washington, and calling at ports tied to the Lewis and Clark expedition, the region’s wine country, and the Columbia River Gorge.
Lewiston sits at the easternmost navigable point on the Columbia-Snake system, roughly 465 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. The city has historically served as a turnaround port for upriver cruise itineraries, and American Cruise Lines opened a dedicated dock there to support its growing schedule.
Why an Idaho Christening Matters
Ship christenings in the United States have traditionally taken place at coastal yards or major river ports such as New Orleans, Baltimore, or Portland. Holding the ceremony in Lewiston is unusual, and according to American Cruise Lines, no ship has ever been christened in Idaho before.
Beyond the symbolic value, the choice points to the strategic importance of the Columbia and Snake corridor for the line. American Cruise Lines has steadily added capacity in the Pacific Northwest over the past several years as demand for domestic river itineraries has grown, and Lewiston is a key turnaround port in that network.
Part of a Broader May Rollout
The Encore christening is one of several launches American Cruise Lines has scheduled for May 2026. The company is also opening its inaugural Great Lakes season on May 22 with American Patriot sailing round-trip from Buffalo, and beginning two of its longest domestic itineraries to date: a 36-day Civil War Battlefields cruise departing New Orleans on May 5, and a 52-day Great United States cruise departing Portland on May 29. Both extended itineraries are tied to the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations.
American Cruise Lines now operates 28 small ships across U.S. rivers and protected waterways, and is the only fully U.S.-flagged small ship operator in the country. The line offers more than 50 itineraries across 35 states, with year-round operations that have expanded steadily since the company’s founding.
