Emerald Announces 2027 Mah Jongg-Themed River Cruises on the Danube

Emerald Cruises is introducing two Mah Jongg-themed river cruises on the Danube in August 2027, combining hosted gameplay with eight-day sailings through Central Europe.

Designed for players of varying experience levels, the cruises will include organized Mah Jongg sessions, instructional opportunities, and onboard social events centered around American Mah Jongg, according to the company.

The first sailing departs Aug. 4, 2027, traveling from Budapest to Munich, while a second departure follows on Aug. 11, operating the same route in reverse. Together, the itineraries include stops in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, Passau, and Regensburg.

Mah Jongg and Mahjong Are Not Exactly the Same

The sailings specifically focus on American Mah Jongg, which differs from mahjong played throughout Asia and other parts of the world.

The original game is believed to have emerged in China during the mid-1800s before spreading globally in the early 20th century. Mahjong arrived in the United States during the 1920s, where American players gradually developed their own variation of the game with different rules, scoring systems, and gameplay traditions.

Today, American Mah Jongg is known for distinctions including yearly playing cards, jokers, and the “Charleston” tile exchange between players. The game is commonly associated with the National Mah Jongg League, which was founded in New York City in 1937 to help standardize rules for the American version of the game. The organization says it has more than 350,000 members nationwide.

On the Danube With Mah Jongg

Both itineraries travel through four countries along the Danube and include stops in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, Passau, and Regensburg.

According to Emerald Cruises, passengers will have opportunities to explore major cultural landmarks across Central Europe, from Budapest’s Heroes’ Square, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion to Bratislava’s medieval Old Town and hilltop castle.

The itineraries also include art-focused excursions in Vienna, including visits to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, along with guided e-bike tours through the Austrian capital. Further along the Danube, passengers can visit Göttweig Abbey in the Wachau Valley, hike to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, or take cycling tours along the river.

In Germany, the sailings continue with walking tours in Passau and Regensburg, accompanied by Bavarian-themed onboard entertainment and regional food tastings, according to Emerald Cruises.

While Emerald Cruises does not market the departures as a combined itinerary, the back-to-back scheduling means players could potentially book both sailings as a two-week, Mah Jongg-immersive cruise. The upside of this is that you can also fly roundtrip to Budapest.

Since the second sailing mirrors the first itinerary in reverse, many destinations and excursions would repeat.

But then, that could leave time for some extra Mah Jongg play.
