Holland America Adds Flåm and Hellesylt to Five 2027 Norway Cruises

Holland America Line has updated five seven-day Norway cruises aboard Rotterdam for 2027, adding calls at Flåm and Hellesylt. The revised itineraries put guests within reach of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage area, which covers Nærøyfjord and the fjord system leading to Geirangerfjord, and are open for booking now.

What Changed

The five sailings split into two itinerary patterns.

Three departures on May 30, June 27 and August 1, 2027 pair Norway’s southern cities with Sognefjord country. Those cruises call at Oslo, Kristiansand, Sandnes (the port for Stavanger) and Flåm, with scenic cruising through the Sognefjord and Oslofjord. Flåm sits at the end of Aurlandsfjord, a narrow arm of the Sognefjord, and is best known as the lower terminus of the Flåmsbana railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge rail lines in Europe.

The other two departures, July 25 and August 8, 2027, focus on the central fjord region. Ports include Eidfjord, Hellesylt, Ålesund and Bergen, with scenic cruising in the Hardangerfjord and Storfjorden. Hellesylt sits near the mouth of the Geirangerfjord system, and Storfjorden is the long outer fjord that funnels ships toward it.

“Northern Europe continues to be one of the most sought-after regions we sail, with fjord cruising ranking among the most desired experiences for our guests,” said Paul Grigsby, vice president of deployment and revenue planning for Holland America Line.

He pointed to Nærøyfjord cruising, the Flåmsbana railway and the waterfalls and viewpoints of the Storfjorden region as the draws behind the additions.

The Timing Matters More Than the Press Release Says

There’s a regulatory clock running behind any Norway fjord deployment right now. Since January 1, 2026, Norway has required passenger ships under 10,000 gross tons to operate emission-free inside the World Heritage fjords, and the same rule extends to larger ships on January 1, 2032. The protected zone covers Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Sunnylvsfjord and Tafjord, which means Flåm itself falls inside it.

Rotterdam, at roughly 99,800 gross tons, is in the category with the 2032 deadline. These 2027 sailings land squarely in the window where a conventional large ship can still reach Flåm and cruise the protected fjords. Expect more lines to lean into World Heritage fjord access over the next several seasons, because after 2031 that access will require propulsion technology most of the current large-ship fleet doesn’t have. For travelers who want Flåm or the Geiranger region on a mainstream ship, the calendar is a real consideration, not a hypothetical one.

Holland America’s 2027 Northern Europe Season

The Flåm and Hellesylt additions are part of a three-ship Northern Europe deployment in 2027. Rotterdam will be joined by Nieuw Statendam and Zuiderdam, with itineraries ranging from seven to 21 days across Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the British Isles, Scandinavia and the Baltic.

The region is home turf for the line in a literal sense. Holland America was founded in Rotterdam in 1873, and its namesake ship, delivered in 2021 as the third in the Pinnacle Class, carries that history back to Northern Europe each summer.

What Travelers Should Know

The five updated cruises are seven days each, all aboard Rotterdam, and all currently bookable. Norway’s summer fjord season is short and demand for Flåm calls in particular tends to run ahead of supply, so travelers targeting the May 30, June 27 or August 1 departures should watch pricing early. Guests booked on earlier versions of these itineraries should confirm their updated port lineup with the line or their travel advisor.
